Portsmouth University:
graduation ceremonies broadcast live with Newtek TriCaster™! |

Bordeaux, France – July 22th, 2009
Portsmouth University officials made a big move forward in 2009 by offering a live streaming of the graduation ceremonies on the Web (from July 15th to July 22nd). This innovative initiative was made possible by the use of NewTek TriCaster, provided by Novatech, a NewTek authorized reseller in the UK.
A total of twelve ceremonies were scheduled –and broadcast as well- in the prestigious southern England university, so that families and friends had a chance to watch the ceremony whether they lived in the vicinity but couldn’t get a ticket or whether they did live overseas…
Gary Bown, a principal lecturer in the School of Creative Technologies, explains: “Main emphasize was to allow oversea student families to see their son or daughter graduate live!”
A precious moment in a parent’s life not to be missed!
The ceremonies, each of them lasting about two hours, were also broadcast on a giant screen in Portsmouth, with the collaboration of the BBC itself!
Indeed: “The BBC have installed four big screens around the U.K, Portsmouth being one of the cities”, points out Gary Bown. “They are set for the Olympics in 2012 but are used for various other uses as well. We have good relations with the BBC in the South and we established permission to stream out our signal to the big screen as well. So, we managed to broadcast live over the Web via www.port.ac.uk/graduationlive, and live via the Web to the BBC big screen at the same time.”
What about the TriCaster? “It did a splendid job”, said the organizers, and everything just went perfect!
The production was actually managed by both students and teachers from the University of Portsmouth’s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCi), who are involved in the project of the newly launched CCiTV channel.
“The School of Creative Technologies (of which BSc Video and Broadcast is a part of) is all about giving students real in-the-field experience. The ability to set-up the TriCaster in an external location and produce a professionally mixed outside broadcast is empowering, flexible and incredibly exciting for staff and students.”
