What could be improved for you?

All 3D software is going to need a radical interface rethink in the next few years. LightWave is actually more straightforward than most, but when interfaces are laid out by programmers with scientific minds, there's always an essential failure to grasp just how stupid artists really are! An interface that's artist friendly is basically child friendly too, which we think makes it better for everyone! We have lots of unusual ideas about how this might be done - if Newtek are interested ;o)

Are you just using it on Macs at the moment?

We use both Mac and PC. The main Mac is Dual 1.42GHz with 1.5GB RAM. The main PC is an Alienware Area51-m: 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB RAM. We also own an 8-node PC render farm running P4 2.2GHz machines.

Are there any plug-ins you wouldn't be without?

Modeler: Vertibevel (Mac), Bevel++ (PC), Rounder (Mac and PC) plus a thousand other free LScripts and plug-ins available through the fabulous LightWave community.

Layout: Shadow Designer and G2.

In your opinion: Integrated or Separated?

Integrated - it's a no brainer! Particularly with the addition of skelegons and morph maps in LW6, you're left to model and adjust animating features into an object completely "blind", which makes no sense. To make adjustments efficiently to an object's size and orientation you need to be able to see it in context. The Hub was a nice try to minimize the problem, but its very creation demonstrates that NewTek acknowledge there is an issue there.

What was the inspiration behind PShelf? It's quite a different concept to the usual texture plug-ins.

Pshelf collections are the solution to many issues we had as professionals working in very time-pressured environments.

Firstly, "texture" collections - libraries of photographs - are long established in 3D and have their place, but they're only the first step in creating a finished surface. No-one was offering ready-to-render professional surface collections for LightWavers, so we felt we should give it a go.

We also wanted a system that was plug-in-free, because plug-in-based surfaces can cause problems in collaborative environments where different people work on different spec LightWave installations. Our collections work with the base system.

Finally, I think a lot of LightWavers would like to build up a library of re-usable base surfaces but they have problems managing their image maps and other assets from project to project - there's no way of embedding them into presets. We tackled this problem by writing the Pshelf Manager app which makes moving all the assets associated with our collections a piece of cake. It also provides useful information about each surface and grows as people obtain new collections. It's such a beautiful solution to surfacing that we often feel a tear welling in our primitive worm eyes!
