Are there any plug-ins you wouldn't be without?

Hmm, hard to say — a lot of things are included in LightWave now so I can't say which is a plug-in and which is a function ;-) The things I find most useful are the spreadsheet, HDRI loader/manipulating and Bandsaw/Bandsaw pro/Bandglue. On the other hand, I'm often too lazy to check all the plug-ins around or to keep in mind what I can do with them so I work mainly with LightWave's basic functions.

Why do you create your tutorials?

To gain publicity ;-), well, not only that - I think it is important to share knowledge, if everybody has to find a solution for the very same problem we won't enlarge our possibilities. So it's good to spread basic and special procedures to speed up the evolution of 3D. Plus I want to show that lot of things aren't very hard to do if you are using the right 3D package.

Are you working on new ones at the moment?

Yes, always. It is my way to learn. If I start to think about problems I just write down what I found and so I force myself to learn and to share the results.

I understand you use Aura as well, what do you think about the integration between Aura and LightWave?

It really rocks. I think this will be a main argument to use Aura for texturing. the usage of Photoshop is very dominant and it will take a while until Aura can do similar things like Photoshop. However, people often think only within the range of Photoshop and so they turn into some kind of blind sheep and stop thinking about other solutions. Aura is not perfect and for the post-production of stills and for complex work on textures it is often not the best solution but this real-time work on UV maps is really great. I hope I will get real-time update of the textures for layout/modeler as well: to reload the texture is not that hard but it could be better.

What does the name of your group "dbki" stand for?

We were working on a CD cover for a juke box CD with tracked sounds ("Tracked Worx 2K" by maz-sound.com). There was a robot on the cover as the main feature and we were unhappy with the head - so we were in search for the breakthrough idea for the head. It is hard to translate but "dbki" means something like the "breakthrough head idea" (durch brech Kopf Idee).

And why is your nickname "da_duke"?

I played Duke Nukem 3D for a long time and all my friends called me duke. I didn't like this nick very much but now I can live with it. after I started using IRC I recognised that this nick was very common, so I added "da_" to it. This is known as very lame in the German computer scene but I've stopped caring about it...

You do a lot of photography. Do you use Virtual Darkroom in your renders?

I've never used it but, now you mention it, I think I should give it a try. We use Aura, Gimp and Photoshop for post-production and a photo or film look is often not required (for games etc).

Tell me more about your fascination with fractals.

This is really an old passion. I started around 1985 to calculate fractals with my home computer. I was always fascinated with 3D conversions of fractal formulae. Now I enjoy using such objects with LightWave because the enormous polycount doesn't drive LightWave into trouble!

Thanks for talking to us Daniel!
