When did you come up with the idea for Alice?

Alice was a sort of a test to improve my skills in texturing and modelling. I made it during autumn 2001.

Given the lack of subsurface scattering in LightWave, how is it that Alice looks so damn good? :) Also, is she animated, or just a still?

Since human skin is a mixture of different tones, I created a luminosity map for her face and blended it in there, so that is faked. I tested out few subsurface scattering plug-ins at that time, but they were way too slow and results were too random. Fresnel and other LightWave plug-ins were mixed to get the final look.

Human skin absorbs and emits light in a way that it is sort of self-illuminated with subsurface scattering and translucency.  I like to 'tint' skin, rather than make it too dark (depending on skin colour), because tones of skin hardly ever burn to white when photographed or filmed. Skin also has a tendency to have more saturation in shadow, which can be achieved with a falloff shader (fresnel or distance shader).

Lights are also a key issue. Generally it takes a lots of lights to get smooth diffuse shade, cause I don't use radiosity much (due to render times). Many times people ignore the value of proper shadows. Sometimes it is much better to work from the shadow rather that the diffuse.

Alice can be seen animated in the Bond November commercial. :) (http://3d.tunneli.com/animation/bond_3dtunneli.com.mpg)

Area lights take nearly as long as radiosity passes to render, so what's the secret?

I mostly use shadow-spinners and area lights for still shots if I am not in a hurry. I wonder why there are no square specular highlights in LightWave rather than just circular, since many of lights in real world are not just light bulbs. I usually create square highlights from geometry as reflection. The secret is to fake everything until it looks just the way you want it. :)

Thanks for your time Veli-Antti!
