Lisez-moi

11/06/2004
We spoke to Aurelien and Loïc from Partizan about their work on the new ads for 7-Up featuring Fido Dido.

How many 7-Up ads have you made and where will they be shown?

There are five spots destined for the international market, three with a mix of real video and composited 3D and two that are completely 3D (but which appear 2D!).

The completely 3D ads "Loud" and "Screensaver" are going to Asia, the other ads are destined for Europe. We've also made another version of "Beach" specifically for France, along with another packshot. In total, fifty countries are going to see this campaign.

What's the difference between the ones in 3D and the ones in 2D?

Technically, all the ads are in 3D. To update Fido Dido's image we opted for a render using radiosity for the spots that had to be composited. For the "2D" spots, the ones with no compositing, we maintained the celshaded look.

Tell me a bit about what goes on in the five ads.

To summarise: "Fido" drinks 7-Up. In addition to that, he freezes the ocean, breaks cars, amuses girls and so on.

How many people were in the 7-Up team?

Six, including us (Loïc Bail and Aurelien Delpoux). We also have to take this opportunity to thank Guillaume Chabal, Julio Del Rio, Arnaud de Mullenheim and Olivier "Blind" Osothimehin.

How long did the 7-Up project take?

A little less than four months:

Pre-production took two for making the animatics, researching locations for filming and the team;

Filming took one week in South Africa;

Post-production took three months - telecine work, modelling, animating, rendering, effects, compositing, editing, colour correction and so on.

Why did the filming take place in South Africa?

For the sunshine and the richness of the countryside and architecture. Plus, there are some very good camera teams in South Africa.

How long did you say you spent in South Africa?

It was about a week. It was very agreeable, even if it was also a very busy time, workwise.

Did you have any limits imposed upon you? Are there things that Fido Dido wouldn't do?

Well, he wouldn't be a loser, sleep with extras, drink any other soft drink... :) More seriously, we could do what we wanted with him, as long as we stayed consistent with the fun dictated by his personality. For instance, we added Fido's ability to go from a 2D to a 3D world.

Were there any creepy crawlies in your 7-Up ads? You guys are well-known for animating fleas and tics...

No! No fleas, no tics - Fido Dido doesn't have them!
