Who does what in the partnership? Are you each responsible for separate areas (like modelling and texturing) or do you both attack everything? :)

Mats: We share the work 50/50, I have the most knowledge about setting up scenes and the render-part.

Trond: I like the modelling bit and design-related stuff.

Mats: Usually we make one of us "head of project" and he is responsible for deadlines etc. on that specific project. We find it important that one person follows the work from start to finish so that he sees and experiences the satisfaction of presenting a finished product as a result of his own work-process. We don’t want to be a small part in a big engine.

The "MIR philosophy", the MIR company and the way we work together has developed over time. This means that we both feel "at home" with the way the company works. So everything is kind of fluid and relaxing even though we work as close as we do. (This is also why we have trouble finding people that "fit" in the MIR-system :) People with good knowledge of design, architecture and 3D should not hesitate to send a showreel, CV or whatever they feel like sending.

What exactly is the "MIR-philosophy"?

Well, that's kind of hard to describe. The MIR philosophy is about being reasonable, optimistic, light-hearted, open and going for what you want with all you've got. We want to stay visionaries even if the people around us get more and more passive and boring. MIR wants to change the world in to a more inspiring place and we want Norwegian architects and architecture to grow and be seen internationally.

Tell me more about the house in the rocks at the shore.

Trond: That house is designed by Mats. It is from back in school when he had an assignment to design a building for peace-conference-purposes at this given place. It's on the very western coast of Norway.

The photomontage is actually pretty rough when given a closer look, and was put together in a hurry the night before presentation day at school.

Tell me more about the magazine picture.

Mats: The Norway Says collection shown in that article was entirely modelled by us. The group was in such a hurry before the exhibition in Milan that they could not complete the prototypes for a photo-session. We rendered the collection, and they are still using the renders instead of real photos of the products.

Trond: Here is a model of a chair designed by Norway Says designer Torbjørn Anderssen.

There is a picture of it to show how we usually model objects. The designers are always checking that the measurements are as they are supposed to be, so that our renders represent their product to its fullest. So we do everything the hard way - numeric, model the profiles and extrude and lathe as we are supposed to.

One thing people tend to ignore when they model objects is the rounding of things. Many seem to do a sort of "random-bevel" on more or less square forms. This is not good enough because the look of the product sort of depend on how edges are smoothed. The model is without the UV textures. Hope this is okay..

More than okay! Thanks guys!

I particularly like the image of you two in the MIR valley. Which is which and did it take long to put all those signs up? Doesn't anyone mind? :)

He he, if anyone minds, we kill 'em. It's Mats to the right, Trond to the left.

Thanks guys! You can go see the MIR Visuals website, but be warned, it's all in Norwegian! :)
