We spoke to Olivier Michon, a great artist who lives in Bordeaux and who has used LightWave and Aura since the start. French people should know his work, especially the little "jingles" that come before and after the ads on French TV channel TF1.

When did you see LightWave for the first time?

It was in 1993. I was a member of an Amiga user group and we wrote to Newtek to ask them to make a standalone version of LightWave. As you know, back then, LightWave was part of the Video Toaster and limited to the NTSC market. While waiting for a reply, I played with LightWave 3.0 (via "LightRave" which emulated the Toaster).

When did you start to use LightWave?

As soon as it was available without the Toaster, on the Amiga. It was version 3.5 in 1994.

What do you like about the program?

Above all, I love modelling in LightWave. Subpatches offer the user great freedom for all things organic and Modeler is really pleasant to use once well configured. Even when I was working with Softimage, I would use LightWave to make certain models.

For you, what is the best tool in LightWave?

On the rendering side, I'm still really impressed with the possibilities offered by HyperVoxels, above all Sprite Mode which renders very fast. On the animation side, I love Motion Mixer.

What could be done to improve LightWave for you?

1. Rationalise the interface. Right now you spend too much time reorganising windows looking for panels that have been masked by other panels, or using keyboard shortcuts with the wrong windows activated...

2. Truly integrate certain plug-ins into the core of LightWave — for instance ParticleFX and HyperVoxels.

Certain modules can't talk to each other. Sometimes LightWave resembles some kind of mad circuit diagram, with three multi-socket extensions plugged into one another. This "Heath Robinson" element is stimulating sometimes, but it can also be a bit fragile. It's always exciting to find very "creative" solutions to technical problems, but it doesn't always work...

What sort of computer are you using at the moment?

An Athlon 900 MHz PC with 796 MB RAM and an nVidia Quadro 2 Pro. I've also got two other older machines that help when rendering.
