What spec machine(s) are you using it on at the moment?

I'm on an Apple Mac 933mhz G4, 1gb of RAM, nVidia GeForce 4 MX with 64mb.

Are there any plug-ins you wouldn't be without?

Well, I'm still really getting to grips with the built-in stuff. There are still many things I've not used yet, there's probably something out there already that would make my job a heck of a lot easier and I just don't know it yet! :) I have got the Unreal Celshader and Edgetracer, though, which I've used once or twice on sketch schemes, I've had some fun with those!

Tell us a bit about why you are using LightWave.

When I got my current job at 2LK Design Ltd, they had no dedicated 3D modelling and rendering software, I was asked to research different packages, to try and find one that would best benefit the company and that I'd be able to get up to speed with quickly. The first one I looked at was LightWave, even though I'd already used 3DS MAX a bit, because of what I'd seen years before and finally here was a chance to get to grips with it myself. When I joined, projects were modelled in Vectorworks and rendered in Art•lantis, which can be a slow process when there are changes to the design. With LightWave, this is a much easier process, with results being seen as they're done, and there's much more depth to the renders. The potential for animation is obviously a lot better, too. Admittedly, it's a little more complicated than some of the other packages I looked at, but there's so much there to play with! It was the best off-the-shelf package I saw, especially Mac-wise, which is the computer of choice here.

Do you do animated walkthroughs of your projects, or is it just stills?

I did a small walkthrough of a demonstration pod last year and I've worked on one this year already, hopefully I'll have time to work on more soon, that's definitely the direction we want to move in at work. When I have the time I want to look into modelling and animating some of my own stuff, but that's a while off, yet.

What would you most like to master in LightWave by the end of this year?

Definitely walkthroughs, for work. Plus more work on texturing. I'd love to master the whole thing, though, but that's not going to happen!! :)

What are your future plans with the package?

Well, just keep using it more and more whenever I can. I want to start some organic modelling, I've only used sub-patch modeling a few times for work, and I want to do some of my own animations, I've a couple of ideas that are just sketches at the moment that I want to put into practice. I guess I'm still quite a beginner compared to other users! At some point in the future I'd like to have a go at something video game related with LightWave, but that won't be for a while...
