The "King of Bling Bling"

Did your “co-workers” know how to use LightWave ? If not, have you taught some of them the basics and how did it go?

I was the 3D specialist, yet I taught an intern the basics of lighting –her name appears in the credits. Lighting and shading are truly easy to learn with LightWave.

What tools and modules of LightWave were especially useful?

I would first mention the quality of the rendering, added to very simple settings –especially with the cameras and lights.
The skinning is not that easy to get, but still, it’s way easier than most of the competing softwares. And something else to point out: the gateway between LightWave and MotionBuilder. It’s very easy, there’s no bad surprise and that’s a great advantage!

What tools and modules would you like in the future LightWave versions?

I would appreciate it if they merged the lay-out and the modeling: to my mind, that would make it even easier to use the software.
The animation tools might be reinforced, especially the dynamics –the softbody and lightbody-, though the particles look great on LightWave.

Right from the beginning, the media were very enthusiastic about the clip, and youv’e grown pretty trendy even outside of France…

Yes. It all started two days after the clip was launched: in Germany Der Spiegel did an interview, which was taken up straight away by the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph. The rest of Europe followed very soon afterwards. I should also state Japan, India, and even Spin Quad website in the US: they granted us an award a month ago! Next month, an article is to be published in GQ (French edition). In the end, both specialist and general-interest media, be it on the Internet, in papers, on radios or on TVs covered the subject…

Had you planned theKing of Bling Bling would be praised to that extent?

We knew there would be an impact, because of the subject matter… But not to that extent!
Over three million people have watched it on the Internet. The clip was broadcast countless times on the four MTV channels, on Game One and on Star – Greek channel –.

A few months ago you started a short animated show called “the Mirror”: can you tell us more about directing that show?

Everything is going so fast: since we launched the animated clip, many Tv producers got in touch to work with us, so we needed to brainstorm future projects. In the end, we’ve decided to keep working on our own for the moment. “The mirror” (french version) is written by dedicated authors, and it’s produced on a very fast pace: we get the text at noon, shoot the scenes later the afternoon. Then I start doing the animation, and the episode is broadcast the next day.

What’s next? The rumor goes that you’re working on the “King of Bling Bling 2”?

You’re well informed! The first clip helped us set the scene and work on a more efficient pipeline: things are going much faster now… You’re right, we really felt like doing a second round, and the “King of Bling Bling 2” will be launched in the mid of May. Daily Motion is sponsoring the clip, and MTV will cover the event too. Well, we have other projects in mind…but it’s way to soon to say it all, so I’m going to keep them secret for now!...

Thanks so much Sylvain and good luck for your next projects !
