Why "Eben"?

The name Eben comes from a magician character I used to play in role playing games, in my youth. :)

Eben is the pseudonym that I chose right from the beginning to use on the discussion forums, particularly that of NewTek of course, but also the excellent CGTalk whose passionate and sometimes turbulent community I really like. 3DVF is also a fine site that provides precious support for French speakers.

Why archaeology? Are you an archaeologist, an architect, or just interested? :)

I do have photographic training and I did use to take a lot of architectural pictures, without knowing that, several years later, I would be modelling buildings! I fell into archaeology just through chance, but in the course of the productions we've done, I've learnt a lot of facts about the history of civilisations. Archaeologists work like detectives, following the slightest clues. In speaking with them I've tried to put their discoveries together and imagine the missing pieces of the puzzle. For doing that, they've given me all sorts of documents, plans, illustrations - sometimes you have to chose between several solutions... you end up picking the one that seems most probable, but without a time machine, it's all hypothesis. You need to have both imagination and scientific rigour.

This time, I've been really finding out about the civilisations of central America, like the Mayans. I really like their sombre and symbolic aesthetic. On top of that, just think, they built all those monuments, still standing today, without the help of the wheel!

Is "LivingStone" being broadcast at the moment? On which channel?

The first series of ten episodes was shown last year in France, on the Voyage and Odyssey channels. Il was also shown around the world on channels including Rai Uno (an Italian channel), Discovery Channel Canada and Hong Kong Cable TV. The second series will be shown from the start of 2005.

The "Aventis" clip on the demoreel seems really complicated. Was it mainly DFX+ or LightWave?

Uh, at the time I was still using After Effect... In fact, I've only just got DFX+ thanks to your offer. The philosophy behind this software seems really interesting, I can see many possibilities for working with LightWave with it in the future...

How did you make the explosion in your "Ultrafrais Cinéma" clip on your demoreel?

These scene is a subtle mix of HyperVoxels and Lens flares, blended skilfully... :) It's not complicated to set up, but you spend your time tweaking envelopes. My present to the readers can be a tutorial explaining how to set it up: http://www.animea.com/tutorial/explo_tut/explotut_en.html

Cool! Thanks Fred!

What are your hopes for the future?

Even if I'm working a lot in archaeology at the moment, I'm really attracted by various different fields of animation. In the scientific realm - I started working with an astrophysicist friend of mine on the rings of Saturn, it's really exciting! - but I hope that this will also lead me to working in film, perhaps building historical props, for example... Also, I've started to work on modelling people: It's very different to what I'm used to, but it's great fun. I guess we'll see over the coming years! :)

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Fred and I hope we can interview you again when you are working in film!

You can find Fred's demoreels and more pictures at his website at http://www.animea.com
