What do you like about character animation?

Being someone else and living his life. It's a strong feeling if you make a character from "an embryo" and gave him life. Teach him to walk, talk and think. It's not a dream anymore, you just live it. I like to be an author, director and actor in one.

Your illustrations look simple in terms of style, are you afraid go to more complex scenes?

I don't think that I'm afraid of complex scenes. You don't need complex scenes to tell the stories. You need a strong idea. People who look at it should get what's going on there at a first look. If I don't need to put the Moabolos in a scene from a gallery or the Antique world to make it look stronger, I just don't do this. He looks strong as he is. His pose, nice lighting and simple background make it look stronger and understandable. That's what I learnt in advertising.

Your profile on your website says that you are a graphic and industrial designer, illustrator, and animator. What are you really?

I'm a person who wants to do all that I'm interested in as best as I can. For now I'm working as an Art Director in advertising. I was studying graphic design and illustration. 3D is my hobby, and I believe it has an important place in my future. I want to finish my animation project and then I will see how far I can go next.

What I like for the moment is that 3D is just a hobby for me. No-one pays me, so I have full freedom do whatever I want. I don't see my future in Pixar or PDI. Working for big companies, where you will be just one of the workers behind the computer. I love to make stories, the worlds where stories take place and create characters … I like do too much. I don't think I would have a chance be able to work the way I like in a big company. Maybe I will go to work for some smaller company, where I could have more chances to work from the beginning to the end on projects. Or I have to make my own. We will see.

How do Czech 3D users find out about the various different packages and what they can do?

Czech users can get information about 3D software in the same way as other European countries. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and English-speaking countries seem to find 3D very popular. We are a bit asleep here, even if we have big animation history with Mr. Trnka and others.

Who is Mr. Trnka?

He was a puppet and classic animator that lived in the 1950s. At that time there were just two well-known names on the animation scene - Walt Disney and Jiri Trnka. He made stories of our historical legends, like Good Soldier Svejk and also many fairy tales. Here is link to a website about the studio he established.

So why do you think that the 3D industry is slow to take off in the Czech Republic?

The problem seems to be with people. They are not looking for something new, or perhaps they don't want to do anything... but I think that technique doesn't matter, the point is what it looks like and what you want to say with it.

I'm looking for the same environment as in Poland. There people are more interested in 3D. They have a few companies and great, well-known artists. I hope that there are great artists here in the Czech Republic too, but they all seem to be hiding somewhere or asleep. I hope they will wake up soon.

Thanks for the Mr. Joseph model David! Speak to you soon.
